Build a living roof green roof. A pre grown green roof mat consisting of a carrier fleece for easy handling specially formulated growing medium and of course sedum plants. Flat roofs are an easier option from a green roof construction point of view but living roofs are able to grow on pitched roofs too. Plant coverage is at least 95 this means from the moment your enviromat is unrolled your roof is fully planted.

I liked the idea of having a bit more greenery in the property we live. An extensive green roof or sedum roof is a roof with vegetation that is more or less self perpetuating and that can further develop and maintain itself. The vegetation is self sufficient growing and developing to provide protection absorb carbon dioxide and creating a point of interest. Now comes the growing medium which for a sedum roof should be at least 8cm 3in deep and for a roof of wildflowers herbs salad and strawberries at least 15cm 6in deep.

There are numerous benefits of having a sedum roof installed on your latest project. Roughly speaking extensive green roofs have a substrate thickness of between 4 and 15 cm and a weight of 30 to 220 kilo per m2. It comprises mature sedum on 20mm of extensive substrate and incorporating a multifunctional water retention and filter layer. A sedum roof is a type of living roof consisting of a layer of vegetation that has been placed on a rooftop.

This means that shed green roofs are a very popular choice along with log cabin and garage green roofs. The fll 2008 guidelines refer to the load at maximum water capacity. Having said that any outbuilding or garden building with a flat roof is a suitable route. There are various layers of sheeting on top to make the roof waterproof.

An all purpose soil less peat free potting mix is fine for growing herbs and other edibles but mix in plenty of perlite to both improve drainage and save on weight. Sedum mat is probably the lightest weight green roof option but there is still a load to consider. A green roof is in ecological terms a great and simple thing to do. Used over a whole roof a green roof will be the single overriding design influence on the house as well as impacting on the construction right down to the foundations.

On top of that we added 75mm of mixed topsoil and gravel into which the sedum plants were sown. We designed and built our own sedum roof on a 5m wide carport. Also mentioned in the context of the above roof types the design loads are the critical factor in deciding the type and construction of the green roof. While redeveloping our house we decided to install a living roof on our kitchen roof why you ask.
